Freddy's Story
When COVID-19 hit, thousands of students across Canada were forced to transition from the classroom to online learning. According to numerous educators, the sudden switch created immense challenges for many young Canadians. In response to the new learning landscape, Freddy Sulowski, a grade 10 student at Father John Redmond Secondary School in Toronto, felt compelled to help his peers struggling in school. In January 2021, Freddy, an outstanding math student, volunteered to work as a math tutor. His school paired him with a ninth-grader nervous about starting high school following a year of online learning.
His first experience as a peer tutor instilled in Freddy a deep love for teaching and a strong commitment to empowering others through education. He has gone on to become a certified L2L tutor and led his school’s free peer tutoring program of more than 30 tutors for over 2 years.
Through participating in Licensed to Learn’s tutor training program, Freddy learned about effective techniques for creating a welcoming learning environment, and how to tailor his teaching approach to suit the individual needs of his tutees. Beyond providing academic support, Frederick has found the most rewarding aspect of tutoring to be witnessing the personal growth and rekindled love for learning among his tutees.
Freddy is now a student at the University of Toronto. He continues to work as a tutor, utilizing the skills he gained from L2L and his love for teaching to make a positive impact on today’s youth!
